The #5 Stages of Climate Change Denial
Climate change denial is notoriously amorphous — the goalposts just always seem to be shifting.
The following five stages pull directly from award-winning climate scientist Michael E. Mann and the Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Tom Toles’ book The Madhouse Effect: How Climate Change Denial Is Threatening Our Planet, Destroying Our Politics, and Driving Us Crazy.
We’re reviewing it in full this week.
A recent Gallup poll confirmed that only 64 percent of everyday Americans think that global warming is caused by human activities. In stark contrast, a different survey found that only 4 out of 69,406 authors of peer-reviewed scientific articles didn’t agree that global warming is caused by human activities.
The reasons for this disconnect are too numerous to address here, but one thing is for sure,
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it” (Upton Sinclair, 1934)
